Wi-Fi Security Essentials for Remote and Hybrid Workers

Home Wi-Fi Is Now Corporate Infrastructure

When employees work from home, their home Wi-Fi networks become extensions of the corporate environment. Unlike office networks managed by IT teams, home networks are configured by individuals with varying levels of technical knowledge. Securing these networks is essential for protecting corporate data.

Securing Your Home Router

Change the default administrator password - this is the single most important step. Enable WPA3 encryption (or WPA2 if WPA3 is not available). Disable WPS, which has known vulnerabilities. Update your router firmware regularly. Change the default network name (SSID) to something that does not identify the router model or your personal information. Disable remote management unless you specifically need it.

Network Segmentation at Home

Most modern routers support guest networks. Use the primary network for your work devices and place IoT devices, gaming consoles, and guest devices on the guest network. This prevents a compromised smart TV from being used as a stepping stone to your work laptop. Some routers also support VLAN configuration for more granular segmentation.

Public Wi-Fi Precautions

When working from coffee shops, hotels, or airports, assume the network is hostile. Use your VPN for all traffic. Verify you are connecting to the legitimate network, not an evil twin with a similar name. Disable auto-connect for Wi-Fi networks. Consider using your phone's cellular hotspot instead of public Wi-Fi for sensitive work. True Protection detects suspicious Wi-Fi networks and warns you before connecting to potentially malicious access points.
